EARL WINTERTON’S PARTY.
SHADOW CABINET STORY DENIED. (Received Tuesday, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. Earl Winterton says he is astonished at stories concerning the week-end party, adding that it was arranged weeks ago. (The "News Chronicle” referred to a week-end party at Earl Winterton’s home, attended by Sir Austen Chamberlain, Sir Robert Horne, Sir H. Page Croft and Sir E. Grigg, as a meeting of the “anti-Baldwin Shadow Cabinet,” but Earl Winterton declared that it was a private party.) ANOTHER DENIAL. MR. RAMSAY MACDONALD NOT RESIGNING. (Received Tuesday, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. ‘There is not a word of truth in it” —This denial from Mr. Ramsay MacDonald ended a day of rumours that he was resigning. Mr. J. H. Thomas spent seven hours at the Colonial Office clearing up State papers and signing documents. Meantime four van-loads of furniture were removed from his flat in Morpeth Mansions into storage. Mr. Thomas’s early quitting was unexpected.
