FOURTH BIRTHDAY.

CARTERTON WOMEN’S DIVISION. The Band Room at Carterton was packed to capacity on Alonday evening when the Carterton branch of the Wairarapa Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its fourth birthday. Visitors were present from all parts of the Wairarapa, including Mrs. A. Clark (president of the Provincial Council), Mrs. Beu (president of the Grey town branch), Miss O. Wolters and Mrs. G. Johnston (president and secretary of the Carterton Women’s Institute), and Mrs. Every and Mrs. Beere and secretary of the Mothers’ League). Many congratulatory messages were received.

Mrs. J. Standen (president) thanked -everyone for their kind remarks and for their presence. She said that perhaps a good many people were not aware of the good work carried on by the division but as the membership increased so would they grow in strength. During the evening the following items were given:—Pianoforte solo, Miss O’Connor; recitations, Miss Margaret Knutson, Mrs. A. McPhee, Air. E. Graham; Dutch doll, Misses Dawn 'Sorenson and Betty Sewell; duet, Miss L. and Mr. J. Harris; mandoline solo, Mrs. Ordish; solo, Miss •Surtees. Community singing was enjoyed by all, several songs being acted in character by members, such as “Two Little Girls in Blue,” “John Brown’s Body” and “Daisy Bell,” these causing much merriment, also the “Long Long Trail,” . many coppers being thrown in. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs. V. Ashton, extras being played by Mesdames Beu and Robinson and Miss McKenzie. The accompanistes for the items were Misses V. Irwin, C. Berril, Court and Knutson. The M’s.C. were Messrs K. Reid and W. Press.

Special thanks were extended to Mrs Era Allen for making and decorating the beautiful birthday cake, the. top tier being raffled, the winner being Miss M. McLean, of South Carterton.
