BACONERS IN DEMAND.

EXPORT TO GREAT BRITAIN. RESTRICTIONS ON PORKERS. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board recently drew attention to the great need for farmers arranging to convert as large a percentage of pigs into the baeoner class as they possibly can. In regard to the quota fixed b. the United Kingdom Government for the present short-term period, i.e. arrivals April, May and June, 1935, the stocks of porker pigs in store in New Zealand at March 31, and which will be available for shipment to arrive in the United Kingdom before June 30, will be sufficient to fill our quota for this period. Accordingly, the Minister of Agriculture, acting on the advice of the Meat Board, has notified all freezing companies that porker pigs killed after March 31, may not be shipped to arrive in the United Kingdom until after June 30. The Meat Board has on previous occasions, pointed out that the imported baeoner trade into the United Kingdom absorbs approximately sixteen times more than the imported porker trade. New Zealand’s share of this- baeoner trade is relatively insignificant, whereas her share of the imported porker trade is substantial. The New Zealand Government and the Meat Board have been successful in obtaining an adequate quota for New Zealand baconers for arrival in the United Kingdom during the calendar year 1935, the quantity fixed for this period of twelve months being 12,500 tons. From a consideration of the foregoing facts, it will be seen that farmers should make their plans to carry on to the baeoner class as large a percentage of their pigs as possible.
