PERSONAL.
Mrs. P. Collis has returned to het home at Dundas, New South Wales, after having spent two months’ holiday in Masterton. The appointment of Mr. Joseph W. Heenan, assistant law draftsman, to the position of Under-Seeretary of Internal Affairs, to succeed Mr. Malcolm Fraser, was announced on Saturday.— (P.A.) Mr. H. A. Goudie, of Rotorua, is at present on a visit to Masterton. Mr. Goudie is an authority on eucalypts and was at one time connected with the State Forest Service nurseries and plantation at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua.
Nurse Cowan, who has been in, charge of the Eketahuna Dental Clinic, has received notice of transfer to Napier, for which place she will leave towards the end of May. Nurse M. Robbie, who is at present at Marton, will replace Nurse Cowan.
The appointment of Mr. E.- D. Good to the position of Comptroller of Customs, to succeed Dr. G. Craig, C.M.G., who retires at the end of the present month, is announced. Mr. H. T. M. Tanner has been appointed to succeed Mr. Good as assistant Comptroller of Customs.—(|P.A.) At the P. and A. meeting at Carterton on Saturday votes of sympathy were passed with Mr.- L. H. Smart in the death of his father, and with the relatives of the late Mr. Adam McKay and of the late Mr. Johnston. A' letter is to be forwarded to Mr. R. G. Kemble expressing sympathy with him In his illness. Mr. O. Skeet was welcomed back and congratulated on his Recovery. He thanked the members for their letter of sympathy received during his illness.'
The many chess friends in Masterton of Mr. Arthur Whitaker will regret to learn of his death which took place suddenly at his home at Palmerston North on Saturday morning. The late Mr. Whitaker was born at Bradford, Yorkshire, sixty years ago. By profession an engineer, he held many important positions in England, South Africa and New Zealand. He was a keen student of English literature, especially 'English poetry. In 1919 he revived the then defunct Palmerston North Chess Club, which under his able and enthusiastic direction grew to be one of the most flourishing chess centres in the Dominion. His genial personality and great knowledge of the game will be sadly missed at future chess gatherings. He leaves a widow and one daughter to whom the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends will be extended in their sad bereavement.
