TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.

PROPOSALS BY BEAUTIFYING, SOCIETY.. ALLAN. MEMORIAL.BRIDGE.. Several: matters of interest and importance to. the town were considered, by the Masterton Beautifying Society at a meeting, of the committee hold, last night. There were present: DrArcher Hosking (in the chair), MessrsE. W. Payton, H. F; Frost, G. G. TSolhurst, C. H. Hanley, H. E. Gardner,. L. Robinson and A. W. Reynolds. Regarding the bridge for the Allan. Memorial Walk Dr. Hosking reported that he had conferred with the Mayor, and the chairman of the Park Committee and steps were being taken, for the early, erection of the bridge. It was hoped to obtain the girders and ether building material at a very tow Cost. It was reported' that over £l4 had been donated towards the Allan. Fund and that two lists were still out. Dr. Hosking placed before the- meeting a- sketch plan which had been approved by the Park Committee, of the Borough Council;, providing fbr the ■group, planting of euealypts, kowhai, kotukutuku, ngaio and other native trees around the horse paddock in the Park with the idea of providing food far- tuis. Mr.. Robinson madk a donation of two dozen kowhais. A list of trees proposed' to be planted was submitted by tjje Park Custodian, Mr. H. Sturgeon and Dr. Hosking was asked to confer with him on the matter. It was decided to spend £l4 on the scheme, which would be carried out this planting season. In regard to the street trees it was agreed to prune back th® liquid ambers in Lincoln Road and Mr. Frost undertook to advise the society as to the spraying of prunus trees to cheek the San Jose scale. Mr. Gardner is to prune the kowhai trees in Jean and Kirton Streets.

Mr. Payton brought up the question of improving and beautifying the triangular area in Short Street between the old and new streets. Dr. Hosking agreed, to see the Mayor and ascertain the views of the Borough for the utilisation of the area, which, he said, was very suitable for planting and beautifying. (

Mr. Payton was authorised to spend £5 on soil for the crossing between Essex and Cole Streets.

Appreciative remarks were madeabout the action of the borough in upper Cornwall Street in moving out tthe kerbing and laying down a strip in grass on the side of the footpath. Reference wa? also made to the care with which Mr. W. Nops attended' to public areas in his neighbourhood and also to tho work done by other residents who looked after the grass strips in front of their houses. It was stated that if this practice were more general, it would greatly enhance the appearance of the town. The action- of Mr. Nops and other residents was greatly appreciated.
