DUNEDIN POST OFFICE.
PROTEST AGAINST SUGGESTED DELAY. AUCKLAND, August 28. Comment was made to-day by the secretary of the Auckland Builders’ Association, Mr. R. G. Norton, on a Dunedin report that only .three Dunedin firms had tendered for the new Post Office. He said that three leading Auckland firms had tendered and that it was reliably reported in the trade that the tenders totalled nine or ten. He regarded the Dunedin report as indicating the possibility that the Government will not proceed with the work. There was no more risk to-day regarding fluctuating prices than at any other time, said Mr. Norton. It was a most advantageous time for securing low prices. The cost of tendering for such a job would be not less than £2o<l per tender, and it would be a shameful breach of faith if the Government, having involved contractors and sub-con-tractors in heavy expense, should decide not to proceed with the work. The Government should not allow any doubt to prevail as to its intentions.—(P.A.)
