ENJOYABLE SOCIAL.

FAREWELL TO TE WHITI SETTLERS.

A very largely attended social and dance was held in the Te Whiti Hall on Thursday night, when people from Masterton and surrounding districts gathered to farewell Mr. and Mrs. Hemi and family, who left yesterday to take up their residence in Papawai. During the evening, Mr. L. Pike, on behalf of those present, referred to Mr. Hemi’s good work while residing in Te Whiti. He had been a. resident there for twenty-five years, and had nearly all that time been a staunch member of the Te Whiti School Committee, having on one occasion given his house, rent free, to a teacher to live in, so as to keep the school from being closed down. He helped to build up the school from ten children to forty children. Air. Pike presented Afr. Hemi with a well-filled wallet, wishing him the best of luck in the future. The audience then sfinig, “For They Are Jolly Cpod Fellows,”” followed by three hearty cheers.

Afr. Hemi suitably replied, thanking everyone for their kindness to him and his family during the period they had resided at To Whiti, and also for the happy gathering that evening. Dancing was kept in full swing till the early hours of the morning. The music was supplied by Aforris’s Orchestra, extras being played by Misses P. Seddon, K. McKay and Mr. S. Kjar. Mr. Bartholomew kindly gave an item, which was enjoyed by everyone. The Afonte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Hart and Mr. A. Hart, and the spot waltz by Miss D. Gourlay and Mr. L. Reri. Supper was served by the ladies.
