RELIEF OF DISTRESS.

STRONG APPEAL FOR BETTER RESPONSE. MAYOR EMPHASISES URGENT NEEDS. In a statement last evening., the Mayor (Mr. T. Jordan) commented in strong terms on the limited response thus far made to his recent appeal on behalf of the unemployed, and urged that all in a position to help should do so.

“It is now ten days since I appealed for help for the unemployed during the coming winter,” said Mr Jordan, “and the result to date is that I have received less than. £60., I am surprised and disappointed. In my late appeal, I endeavoured to show that there was an urgent need before us. I am reluctant to believe that the public are not concerned, but they certainly have not shown that they realise that they are concerned with the distress that is in our midst.

-“Until we all realise that we have some duty and responsibility in this matter,” Mr. Jordan continued, “we shall not begin to grapple with it. I know full well that many amongst us are on the borderline of distress themselves and cannot help, but I know also there are many among us who can and should assist. They have simply not directed their minds to this question. So far, I have not received one shilling from the country district, but wo have most of its unemployed in town.

' A sixpenny collection in this town,” said Mr. Jordan, “should yield over £2OO. My total is less than £6O I have recently been asked to accept nomination for the very responsible post of Mayor of the town. May I now in. return ask for the tangible support of citizens in a cause which I believe is more urgent than any we have yet had before us?” MAYOR’S FUND. RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT. The Mayor (Mr. T.
