BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY.

ENJOYABLE GROUP EVENING.

VOCAL & GRAMOPHONE ITEMS. A very enjoyable evening was spent by members of the vocal, gramophone and literature group of the British Music Society at the residence of Mr. and Mrs T. Jordan last night. There was an attendance of over thirty and an excellent programme was rendered by local artists. Miss Marjorie Mackay, a promising young singer, contributed "The Lass With the Delicate Air” (Arne) and "Where the Bee Sucks” by the same composer. Miss Doreen Jamieson sang the "Waltz Song” from "Romeo and Juliet” (Gounod) and "Birds in the Night” (Sullivan). Mr. V. Greer cnose as his two numbers "Where E’re you Walk” (Handel) and "I Hear a Thrush at Eve” (Cadman). Mr. Seymour Gilding sang "Castillian Lament” (Teresa del Reigo) and "Sylvia” (Oley Speaks). Two excellent duets of Maori songs—"E Pare Ra” (Sir Apirana Ngata) and "Her Little Maori Home” were given by Mrs T. Corkill and Miss N. Cocker. An interesting gramophone recital of the first movement of Brahm’s Symphony was also included in the programme and Mrs Jordan gave an outline of Brahm’s life and music. All the artists prefaced their numbers by either a short description of the song or of the life-story of the composer. The accompaniments were ably played by Mrs H. M. Morton. Mr W. C. Mann, Group Leader, thanked the artists and Mrs Jordan and it was decided that the next group meeting would be held at the residence of Mrs Archie Daniell, Albert Street, on May 31, when, in view of this year being Brahms’s centenary, a Brahms evening would be held.
