GREAT RUSH OF STOCK.
WAINGAWA COPES WITH sptuation It is generally recognised that the phenomenal hot spell of weather in February last might have been disastrous to the Wairarapa if the Waingawa Freezing Works had not efflei-* ently handled the situation. The majority of local farmers already know that 150,000 sheep and""lambs and 3,000 head of cattle were attended to at Waingawa in record time. Owing to the dry spell there was; a tremendous rush of stock to all works and all were working to their utmost capacity. Such a state of affairs nat* urally opens up the qustion: “What would have happened if Waingawa had' not opened?” Down in Wellington thousands of sheep were held up in consequence of a slight difference with the men. The coiitretempts would have been extremely awkward if Wairarapa stock had been added to the general confusion. Waingawa is the Wairarapa’s safeguard, and should get every assistance and encouragement from local farmers by helping to maintain it under enterprising management.*
