MAIN HIGHWAYS.

CHARGING OF GENERAL ACCOUNT.

The Eketahuna County Council debated a motion that all roads in the county gazetted under the Main Highways Act be a charge on the general fund. The mileages in the different ridings are: Alfredton 28 miles. 44 chains, West 9 miles 50 chains, East 7 miles 00 chains.

The chairman stated the alteration would simplify matters as separate accounts had to be kept or expenditure on those roads. Under the present system if money was being raised a proposal might be carried in one riding and defeated in another and the work would become piecemeal. Under the motion any loan proposal would be submitted to the county as a whole and either endorsed or rejected. Some movement would have to bo made soon, for the Government intended to proceed almost immediately with the Mt. Bruce road and the deviation at Wi Waka. The matter of a standard road would have to be considered, particulrly in respect to Alfredton. where a main highway crossed the railway line either a subway or a ' bridge would have to be provided, i Fortunately there was only one case here. i Cr. Hay asked if the motion was in I accord with tho Act. The chairman said it was. '■ Cr. Hay then seconded.

In discussion the chairman said the I Council could declare certain roads main ones and a charge on the general : fund even if they were not gazetted ’ by lhe Highways Board. The debate was adjourned for a legal opinion.
