TRAGEDY AT PONGAROA.

MAN BURNED TO DEATH. MR T. BRANNIGAN’S END. The destruction by fire of a oncroomed whare at Mangatiti road. Pongaroa, yesterday morning, resulted in the death of Mr Thomas Brannigan, a middle-aged man well-known as a mail contractor and carrier on the Ma-kuri-Pongaroa road. At about 3 a.m., the fire was discovered by a telegraph messenger, and when helpers Arrived they could do nothing to get Mr Brannigan out, as the whare was a mass of flames. A garage adjoining, owned by Mr H. Souness,, was also destroyed, with a mfltor car. It is surmised that, during a heart attack*, to which Mr Brannigan was subject-, he knocked over a small bracket lamp which 'he was in the habit of placing above his bed. A small insurance was on the whare, and it is understood that the garage and car were also covered. Mr Brannigan belonged to an old Rakaunui family, and his relatives live there. He was a brother of ,Mrs L. Greenbank, of Masterton. The inquest will be held this morning.
