GANDHI ARRESTED.
STAGGERING RISING PREDICTED Delhi, March 10. —Gandhi has been arrested at Admedabad. on a, charge of sedition. The last stage of the Prince’s visit was marred by the usual manifestations of hostility by the adherents of Gandhi. The hartal which was proclaimed in Rawalpindi yesterday for three days became general in the Indian quarter to-day. Shops were closed and wheeled transport was materially reduced by a strike of taxidrivers. Gandhi’s agents endeavoured to prevent the inhabitants from in any way participating in the welcome to the Prince. A number of the ringleaders were arrested. The Prince is staying in a house well removed from the disaffected area. He reviewed the troops of the garrison in the morning, and saw the! largest and best- display of British and Indian units he has witnessed during hi s tour. (Received 5.5 p.m.) Washington, March 11.—Those representing Gandhi in America state that if he is arrested it- will be the signal in India for an outbreak, the most staggering in history. It is declared that Gandhi is the only persoa able to hold the extremists in check, and his arrest would remove the restraint on violence. —(A. and N.Z.)
