SHAMROCK IV WINS.

RESULT OF THIRD RACE.

EARLY LEAD SECURED,

(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian-N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, July 20.

The third race for the America Cup was won by Sir Thomas Lipton's yacht Shamrock IV., which -won the first race as the result of an accident to tho American Cup defender, Resolute, whose throat halliards carried away. (The second race could not bo finished within the time limit.) The course of the race was a roach to the south-south-east, a beat west-by-nor.th, and a reach north-east-by-north. The Shamrock's starting time -was 15 min -ISsec past noon, and the Resolute's 16min 2(sscc past noon. Tho Shamrock had a difficulty with her balloon-jib, and the Resolute passed her to leeward at 12.22. The wind was light. The Shamrock's sail-setting was bungled, and the Resolute slipped along smoothly, while her Rival's hcad'sails were not filling well. At .12.50 the Resolute's balloon-sail was acting splendidly, and five minutes later the Shamrock was half a mile astern on the weather side.

j At 1 p.m. the Resolute lost tho jwind, and at 1.10 the Shamrock passJed her to windward. At 1.25 she was loading by a quarter of a mile. The breeze was then hauling to the south. At 1.45, the Shamrock caught the first breath of the south-wester, and was half a mile ahead. The Resolute picked up a quarter of a mile, and went to starboard for the mark, then three miles away. At 2.2 the Shamrock followed suit, and turned tho mark at 28min 28sec past 2. The Resolute turned the mark at 32min 41sec past 2. Tho little triangular fore-stay-sail of the Shamrock was behaving wonderfully, and kept always full. At 3.15, tho Shamrock led by nearly a mile. The second mark was turned by the Shamrock at 26min 29sec past 4, and by the Resolute at 43min SGsec past 4. When the Shamrock turned, tho Resolute was a mile astern, but she sailod fast to the mark, and was gaining, and a close race appeared probable. As the Shamrock was neariug the finishing line, a big hole appeared in her balloon jib. The Shamrock finished at 37min f)Bsecs past o. [The America Cup was won at Cowes in 1851, and Sir. Thomas Liptou, following several other British yatchsmen, has been endeavouring ever since 1899 to recover it, hitherto without success. On his previous attempts he

lias been beaten in nil three races of each series. As the Cup is won by two successes out of the three races, it presumably passes at last into his hands, and will have to be challenged for by the United States, and raced for in British waters. Sir Thomas Lipton 's first "win, however, was the result of an accident to the Kcsolute, and he is reported to have stated that if the defenders wished to call that race off he was willing to do so.]

NEW ZEALAND'S CONGRATULATIONS. The Prime Minister lias sent tlie following cablegram to Sir Thomas Lipton at New York:—"On behalf of New Zealand send you our heartiest congratulations on Shamrock's victory. Nothing succeeds like success, and British tenacity has at last come in for its due reward.—(Sgd.) Massey, Prime Minister."
