TROOPS TO PROTECT RAILWAYS. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian-N.Z. Cable Association.) deceived Last Night, 8.45 o'clock. WASHINGTON, July 19. The State Department learna that the Anfu forces have sustained a severo defeat, and have retired to Peking. General Wang, commanding the troops in Peking, is taking measures to protect the city against violence from Anfu troops. The Peking city gates are closed, but the people aro calmer. Telegraphic communication with Tientsin has been resumed. American troops, numbering more than a thousand, are preparing in conjunction with the forces of other nations in China, to protect the Peking-Tientsin railways. This can be done under the' Boxer agreement. It is rumoured that Japanese influence is supporting the Anfus.
