WELFARE LEAGUE.
PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL CONFERENCE.
A meeting in connection with the above was held in the A. and P. Rooms in Masterton last night, when a small but representative gathering was present. His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. H. Jackson) presided, and briefly introduced Mr A. P. Harper, organiser of the League, who outlined the work and objects of the Welfare League, which, he said, took matters I from the national standpoint, and not from either a sectional or party point of view. It held that something' must be done to get at the cause of the present industrial unrest, and that the exsiting relations between employer and employed must be improved. To that end, the League was endeavouring to have, a National Industrial Conference, at which the matter could be discussed, and a solution of the problem arrived at. After a number of those present had spoken, the following resolution was carried: —"That this public meeting of citizens of Masterton support the proposal that the Government shall convene a National Industrial Conference, at which actual employers and workers shall be present, for the purpose of considering the questions proposed by the Welfare League." At the close, Mr Harper proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding, and expressed his pleasure at the friendly.'manner in which the subject had been discussed by the various parties present. Similar resolutions to the above wore carried at a mooting of employers and a mee'ting of the Masterton branch of the Farmers' Union yesterday afternoon.
