SLAUGHTER OF STOCK.
In the course of his address at the meeting of shareholders of 'the Bank of 'New Zealand yesterday, Gtfr Harold Beauchamp said: — "It is to <be feared that the high yield for .meat is inducing prodigality in the slaughter of stock, and there is reason to apprehend that our flocks and herds are being induced in numbers to such an extent that the adequate stocking of our pasttire lands will, in the near future, become a very difficult problem for our farmers; More especially is this remark true in the case of cattle, of which class .<pf tftock a to ore than ordinary number of young beasts are finding their way to tho slaughter-house."
There is a good deal of truth in this statement. (Nevertheless, during the progress of the war it is desirable that we should ship as much meat as possible to England, so that our soldiers may be well sustained. • At the conclusion of the ■war, .it may be necessary to place an embargo upon the exportation of centain classes of ■ meat, notably lieifer beef and ewe lambs.
