FIRE AT MASTERTON.
BOARDING-HOUSE GUTTED
An eleven-roomed house in Lower Queen street, Masterton, occupied a private boardmg-liouso by Mrs K Neilsen and owned by Mr .b. _u. Hare, of Pahiatua, was fitted by fire at about 8.15 o'clock last nignt. A passer-by detected flames issuing from an upstair window, and mmediately gave the alarm. Tho members of the Firo Brigade wero qmcsly on the spot, and succeeded in confining the fire to tho top-storey, which, however, was gutted. As far as could he gleaned, the outbreak occurred in ono of the upstairs rooms, into which two men had been "given permission to place their swags, prior to staying for the night. How the fire started is not known, though it is presumed tno men who had vacated the _oom, left'a candle burning and this igjiited the curtains. Tho building. Which was of wood, was ono of tho oldest in Masterton, and had oeen fccupiod by Mrs Neilsen for tho past twenty years. It is understood there is an insurance on. the building and furniture, though the amounts were not acertainablc last night. •
