GENERAL ELECTION.

the masterton contest MR C. R. SYKES RE-ELECTEVJ. A SUBSTANTIAL MAJORITY. Groat interest was taken in the elections yesterday, and throughout the Dominion the pollmg apnear* have bean very heavy. In the Masterton eitjetorat-o both part of '.v«.-n»-t-t< industriously, and in the best o< humour. The tirst ■ esults wej<-> au nouuced before seven o'clock, aiul gave Mr Hogg a lead of'several hundreds. The country returns soon began to come in, however, and at eight o'clock it was seen that Mr Sykes must win. A large crowd assembled in front of the "Age" office, where the results were displayed on a hoarding. -Great interest was manifested, and cheers went up from the. supporters of either side. '■ The final reaults from the different centres were slow to arrive, but a general idea of the state of parties was obtainable about midnight. After the result of the Masterton. poll had become known, Mr Syke&, the successful candidate, addressed a very large' assemblage from the baloonv of the "Age" office. The appearance of Mr Sykes was the sig" nal for loud and prolonged cheering from the major portion of the crowd, and hoots from the Reform (andidato's opponents. . , ■. . In a short speech, Mr Sykes .-aii that they had don© him that day the greatest honour that it was possible. for them to do. They had returned him, despite strenuous opposition. He hadi strong organisation aga.'in,'.t him, but the organisation was not strong enough. He thanked the citizens of Masterton, the settlers of the district and the working people. In the hands labour rested the verdict ol the people. (Applause and uproar.) Jn the next three years he would endeavour to do his utmost for +he district. H e would help the dsstr*.. by following lip a good solid land policy (applause). In conclusion he said he felt no undue exultati m m the victory, because a- good tld tind veteran had gone down. He then called for three, cheers tor Mr Hog,',, which were lustily given- Chcc P were then given for Mr who again thanked the people for electa hi Mr Hogg, the defeated ' ancHuite, also returned thanks to the eiec tors.

A VERY CLOSE VERDICT.
