CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
CARTERTON BRANCH. One of the most successful and enthusiastic meetings ever held in connection .with the Wairarapa Caledonian Society took place at Carterton on Saturday night, the occasion being the formation of. a branch of the Society in that township. Messrs J. B. McKenzie (president), J. Georgeson and T. G. Hoar (vice-presidents), \V. Gillespie (secretary), H. Pearson-(pipe-major), C. Hausmann, B. 11. llayner and N. J. White (director?) met 23 members of the Society at the Marquis of Niormanby Hotel. Tho surprise-packet occurred when Mr T. S. Arcus handed in three setts of foolscap containing the names of seventysix proposed new members, most of the business men and all the leading men in the district being included. A very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Amis for his energetic and successful canvass was unanimously'carried by acclamation. The following gentlemen were elected a provisional committee to carry out the proposed sports and concert, and also other business arising in connection with the branch, viz., Messrs A. E. Booth, Colin Campbell, T. S. Arcus, P. Shankland, F. N. Jackson, G. Dykes, .T. Smith, W. Pearson, Gordon Hughan, H. MePhee, E. Eagle, junr., J. Harp, W. Poller, T. H. Hughes, W Fisher, R, Duncan, C. Reid, E. McKenzie, D. J. MacAnlny, W. H. Booth, A. MePhee, and Dr Gunn. Mr T. S. > Arcus was unanimously elected chairman of the Carterton committee. Tt was .suggested that tlio sports meeting be held on Thursday, April 10th, but this matter was left in tho hands of the committee to deal with. It was decided that the next meeting be held on Friday, the 14th inst., same time and place, to elected a local secretary, prepare programme, and other business. The president intimated tbat Mr IT, Parley had kindly offered a gold medal to be allotted to any class the committee may decide upon. Tho < O'er was gratefully received, and a hearty vote nf thanks was accorded to the donor. At the conclusion of the business, the president proposed the toast "Tho "Wairarapa Caledonian Society," and another. "Success to the Carterton branch coupled with the name of the chairman, Mr T. S. Arcus." Both toasts were responded to with enthusiasm : to tho latter tho company heartily sang "For he's a jolly good fellow." The Carterton branch starts under most favourable auspices, the total membership now being 113.
