THE SLAUGHTERMEN.
There is reason to hope that, in spite of the fact that the slaughtermen at the Wellington freezing works havo given notice of their ' intention to cease work at the end of the month. Matters may be adjusted by tie exercise of a little common-sense and amity. It is true that the demands of the men are, in some respects, unreasonable. Still, there are directions in which concessions could, and should be made. If it be true that the slaughtermen in Australia are receiving 28s 6d per hundred, there is no good reason why New Zealand men shoiijd not receive «imi!ar pay particularly when it is remembered that in other branches of thfi industry substantial concessions have been made. We t would urge upon the Companies tho desirability of meeting the men in an [amicable -spirit, and endeavouring to j arrive at a. compromise before the sit> I uation reaches the stage of a rrisis.
