TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.") The Masterton Racing Club's Autumn Meeting will be held on 17tb md 18th March, and, the autumn fixture of the Wairarapa Racing Club on to the 26th and 28th. Outside owners will thus have two meetings in the one district to compete at without losing much unnecessary time. The Opaki trained horses- Full Rate and No Trumps have been nom inated for events at the Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting, to be held on 16th and 17th inst. The first named has been allotted 9st 21b and 9st in two races, being top weight" in t both. No Trumps is handicapped at 7st 41b in the Taranaki Cup, of one mile and a quarter, and as the opposition includes a number of very capable performers. The Possible mare will ' need to be at her very best to score a victory!.
Great interest in the Australian running of Bobrikoff and Downfall is sure to be evinced by New Zealand sportsmen. Several turfites ' have made up their minds tp take a trip across the water to folliow the racing of the champion, Bobrikoff; Mr Lowry's horses have gone into Redfea'rn's stable, and should be in fine condition next month,, when they are called upon to race with some of Australia's best performers.. It is stated that Gold Lace;. Crocinella and Gold Thread may be taken over to Australia shortly for autumn racing; They have proved decidedly good performers in this country, and the trip should prove a payable one for their owners..
J. McCombe, owner of lawbaki, Stayboy and others,, has changed hia mind about taking: up training operations at Trentham,, and is returning to Wingatui, Otago. The Wairarapa entrants tor next year's Ashhurst Guineas are Mr J. Cotter's Sir Laddo-TUhirangi gelding;. Mr J. Cress" Ihe WorkmanPemmiean gelding; Mrs Mead's filly by Saracen-Waituru; Mr A. Wilton's fi% by Porirua-La Marquise, and Mr JKeside's St.. Ambrose-Ziska filly. At Opaki yesterday morning, a fair number of horses were out, but most of the work was merely half to three quarter pace gallops. M McGrath sent Osiris, Tumut, Aberration, Sunbonnet, and First Consul good working exercise. This'useful lot are all in good solid working order. R. Knox has Merrie Rose in work again after a spell of three months, and the Merrie England mare is naturally big in condition. She ran once round in good style. No Trumps was galloped nine furlongs on the course proper, in view of her Taranaki Cup engagement. She moved freely, and certainly no fault can be found relative to her racing trim. J. Cress' team consisted of Kiltie Lass, Volley filly, Thera and Pukewai, and J. Phillips gave Critic and , Kalypso useful work. W„ Garrett was represented by Sir Solo, Embroi cation and Afterthought, all looking well. •.
