THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, MARCH 1909. PRESIDENT TAFT'S POLICY.
In his inauguration address President Taffc made it qu'te clear that he intends to carry on the Roosevelt policies, n:it only in regard to the Federal control of trusts, and of inter-State commerce, and the supervision of railways, but also in regard to external affairs. He announces that every precnution must he taken to prevsnt and punish outbursts against foreigners, who possess treaty rights, and also that the United States must have "a suit-, able army and navy" to maintain its interests in possible international controversies in the Orient. In fact, now that the American Union has definitely become en gaged in oversea territorial expanj sion in spite of the Monroe Doctrine, which infersntially limited its territory to the American continent, it is discovered that increased military and naval strength must be developed in order that the Republic may be able to hold what it has
gained. The price of safety for a Power that embarks on oversea colonisation is not only eternal vigilance, but also a greatly increased armament. Big additions to the United States aimy, and a progressive programme of naval construction are practically certain, and the momentous entry of the United States nto world politics will have to be supported by an ever-increas-ing display of armed force. This was, alter all, inevitable. And within a decade or two the new world that was called in to redress the balance of the old, may become in wealth and numerical strength the controlling factor which must be taken into account in preserving international equilibrium even in Europe.
