Mr W. C. Buchanan. M.P. for Wairarapa, is on a brief visit to Wellington. ft is stated that Mr J. T. M. H'jrnsby will be a candilate for the Carterton Mayoralty. Miss Robinson haa resigned the position of Librarian of the Greytown Library. Mr T. E. Donne, Superintendent of the Tourist Department, has recovered from liis recent illness, and resumed his duties in Wellington. The [lon. James M'Gowan is still at Thames. He is improving in health, and intends, ' according to the '-'Star." to visit Te Aroha and Rotorua shortly. The Wellington Education Board has appointed the following assistant teachers:—Kaipa'roro,' Miss G. Mackay; Te Ore Ore, Miss L. Smith; Maranui, Miss M. Scott. FIRE BRIGADES' DEMONSTRATION. A COMPETITION WON BY MASTER! ON.
By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 10. The United Fire Brigades' Annual Demonstration commenced here toj day. The events are b?ing contested by seven hundred firemen from all | parts of the Dominion. Results:— Hose Reel, Flat and Ladder, five men.— Maj.terton, 37 2-ssec, 1; Auckland City. 37 3-ssec, 2; Dunedin South, 37 4-ssec, 3; Timaru, 38 2-5 sec, 4. Hokitika and Westpor*, 38 4-ssecs, were also close up. Manual Engine Competition, five men. —Napier, 41 35sec, 1; Timaru, 43sec, 2; Hawera, 45ssc, 3; Hastings, 46sec, 4. « Manual Engine, one man. —Hawera, 35sec, 1 ; Napier, 3b"sec, 2; Geraldine, 37sec, 3; Timaru, 3Ssec, 4. Coupling Event, two men.—There were 38 rmtries in this event, and it was not completed to-day. Eight more teams have to compete. Timaru is leading, having made a record time for the event, viz., 34 3-ssec. Dannevirke 35sec, Eastown Railway 35 4 ssec. Dunedin South 35 4-ssec, and Masterton 35 l-ssec, have all done good work. Tomorrow the visiting firemen will be entertained at a harbour excursion, and the competition will be continued on Saturday. The name of AYLMER'S, WiHis-st.
