NAVY LEAGUE PROGRESS.
The Navy League movement in Masterton is being rapidly forwarded •since the visit to Masterton of Lieut. Knox, R.N. The feeling is growing that the safety of the Empire and its colonial dependencies lies so much in the maintenance of an efficient navy that appeals for funds to urumote 'Naw league objects are being generously responded to. Yesterdjy Mr A. I', Whatman, the proprietor of "Abbotsforri" Station, entered into a legally executed bond which provided that he would contribute £I,OOO towards a new battleship, provided the balance of the amount necessary for such a purpose which would bring the total to about a :nillion sterling, is subscribed p New Zealand, and .that the battleship is named "The Abbotsford." Whether Mr Whatman's "sporting" offer will or will not ra suit in any tangible benefit in the direction set out, it is an indication that there is activity among the local Navy League sympathisers.
