LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Thursday afternoon is again to be the shops and offices half-holiday in ths Masterton County during the current year, the County Council deciding to that effect at a special meeting yesterday afternoon. The Chief Engineer of Roads has forwarded authority to the Masterton' County Council to expend £IOO on a £ tor £ basis on tne Alfredton Road, from the Waihoki Road junction to the Masterton County boundary. The Langdale sports are to be held next Friday, and arc being eagerly looked forward to, writes our Tinui correspondent. Ail the best jumping horses in the district will be competing in the horse events. Altogether patrons should have an enjoyable outing. Back up a sewor ana yon \vili poison tne whole neighbourhood, clog up the liver and bowels and your system is lull of undigested food —which sours and ferments—this means indigestion, hoadache, bad breath, yellowskin. and everything that is horrible. Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets quickly stop fermentation in the stomach, and they make the liver lively tone up the bowels, and set the whole machinery going. For sale by all chemists and storekeepers.

A case of scarlet fever on Upper Plain was reported to the Masterton County authorities by Dr A. Hosking last month. Our Tinui correspondent writes:— The weather still remains unsettled. Several hay crops have been spoilt, and farmers are getting anxious about their grain crops. The maintaining inviolate of the secrecy of the ballot was a delicate matter on several occasions during the hearing of the license petition. One witness, according to counsel, was quite prepared to say which way she voted, but the Bench promptly declined to hear it, Mr James remarking that it was wrong for anyone to say h.iw they voted. Special orders were confirmed by the iMastcrton County Council yesterday as follows:—£2so loan for the Taueru bridge, Aliredtou-Tinui RoaJ (rate 1-Gd) ; Ihuraua stream bridge, Alfredton-llinemoa Road (rate Id) ; .£■l,ooo road loan, Alfredton-Weber Road; £2,500 Opaki irrigation loan and £4,500 Lansdowne high pressure wa'.er schemes. Mr Skerrett argued so persistently for light costs against the petitioners in the licensing poll case yesterday, that Mr Hollings reprovingly remarked, "I'm surprised at my friend's attitude. Pie's had his fight and now doesn't want to pay for it." "That shows the wisdom of having the stakes paid in advance," smilingly observed Dr McArthur. The Horowhenaa County Council forwarded to the Masterton County Council a copy of a resolution passed by the Horowhenua Council in favour of municipal control of the liquor traffic. The letter came before the Council yesterday, the general opinion of Councillors being that the matter was not within the province of the Council. It was unanimously decided to take no action in the matter. The total shipments of cheese for the month of December from the four factories in the Carterton district are as follow:—Dalefiekl Factory, 1,310 cases, approximate value £5,240; Parkvale Factory, 659 cases, value £2,636; belvedere Factory, 343 cases, value £1,372: Taratahi Factory, 332 cases, value £1,328. Total December shipments of cheese, 2,644 cases; total value, £10,576. These figures are approximate only. The preparing of plans and estimates for the forming and culvr-rt-ing of a road to the East Coast from the main road through Riversdale is a matter to which the County Engineer (Mr D. McLachlan) is to give attention. Cr H. O. Toogood moved in this direction at the meeting of the County Council yesterday. Cr Toogood said the road was already surveyed, and would, he understood, shortly be Gazetted. The following tenders were accepted by the Masterton County Council yesterday afternoon for the works specified: Blairlogie road, 710 cubic yards metal repairs, M. Kerins, £l9B 10s (four tenderers); Masterton-Waimata road, 1,340 cubic yards metal repairs, Gadsby and Bartlett, £2BB 15s (four tenderers); Brancepeth road, 910 cubic yards metal, Gadsby and Bartlett, £145 (seven tenderers). John Hansen, a third offending inebriate who established something of a record by appearing before the Police Court at Masterton at three successive sittings charged with drunkenness, was hailed *befora Mr W. P. James, S.M., yesterday morning. He was given a very severe caution by the Magistrate, who ordered accused to come up for sentence when called upon. Accused was strongly advised to leave the town at once. The question of whether the waters of the Waipoua river should run in one channel at the northern approach came before the Masterton County Council yesterday, through the medium of a letter from the Chambers of Commerce recommending that in the interests of economy one channel was preferable. The suggestion received rather a chilly reception, Cr Toogcxl immediately moving that the letter lie on the table. The motion was carried unanimously without discussion.

A general meeting of shareholders of the Workmen's Friend Building Society was held last evening in the Y.M.C.A. Kooms, Mr A. Donald, Chairman of Directors, presiding. The annual report was received, and after several deletions had been made, was adopted. It was decided to hold an extraordinary genend meeting of shareholders a month hence, when directors will be elected, and important business discussed. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the proceedings. It was refreshing to see the display of legal chivarly in the examination and cross-examination of witnesses of the fair sex during the hearing of the license petition at Mastarton. Asking a single lady on the electoral roll her age is obviously a conventionally unchivalrous proceeding, so counsel for the respondents toned down tliß awkward query to asking such a witness was she qualified by age to vote. Even the Bench and opposing counsel did not proceed to the usual judicial lengths of definiteness and insist on knowing her exact age, the lady's reply being received with a forbearing smile all round. WHY IS SANDER& SONS PURE VOLATILE EUCALYPTI EXTRACT superior to any other Eucalypti Product ? Because it is the result of full experience, and of a special and careful process of manufacture. It is always safe, reliable and effective, and the dangers of irresponsible preparations which are now palmed off as Extract are avoided. A death was recently reported from the use of one of these concoctions and in an action at law a witness testified that he suffered the most cruel irritation from the application to an ulcer of another, which was sold as "Just as good as SANDER'S EXTRACT." Therefore, beware of sucb deception. Remember that in medicine a drop that cures is better than a tablespoon that kills, and insist upon the preparation which was proved by experts at the Supreme Court of Victoria, and by numerous authorities daring the ast 35 years, to be a preparation of enuine merit, viz: THE GENUINE SANDER AND SONS PURE VOLATILE EUCALYPTI EXTRACT. Send the documents of your importations to MESSRS J. J. CURTIS & CO., LTD., Customhouse Shipping and Forwarding Agents, Customhouse Quay, Wellington who will quickly clear, pass and forward the goods to you. Moderate charges.

Only occasionally in the history of a town is a high-class stock of drapery, clothing, mercery, etc., such as that carried by Messrs Warnock and Adkin in their Masterton premises, dispersed by public auction. From an announcement appearing on page 8 of this issue, however, it will be seen that on Saturday next the auctioneer steps in with instructions to knock down to the highest bidder every line offered. The stock is composed of a huge collection of high-class seasonable fabrics, such as is usually found in a leading drapery warehouse, and as Messrs Warnock and Adkin have definitely decided to close down in Masterton, the stock is to be left here at any price. The opening date of sale is Saturday next, at 11 a.m., and it will be continued from day to day until the lot is cleared.
