LARGE AREA DEVASTATED,

SYDNEY, December 23. Rain has checked the fires in the Gundagai district. At Corowa the fires swept an area of twenty miles by seven. Many settlers' crops were destroyed. The fires did much damage in the Albury and Germanton districts.
