SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. Received July 29, 9.41 a.m. SYDNEY, July 29. Webb will have the services of Jack Mitchell in his last week's training for the sculling championship. There is an impression that the New Zeaiander has not shown the public what he can really do in a boat. His supporters state that there will be plenty of money to back Webb, Towns js easing down in his training, as he is down to about his right weight. OBITUARY. The Federal Government p-oposes to ask for a vote of £50,000 to bring the resources of Australia under the notice of the working classes of Britain. FIRE ON A MAIL STEAMER. Received July 30, 1.11 a.m. SYDNEY, July 29. An outbreak of fire was reported at 11.30 o'clock (the hour of closing the cable), to-night, aboard the French mail steamer Ville de la Cortat, lying at Circular Quay. Several engines have gone to the scene, and as the flames have not yet spread far there are hopes of checking the fire before serious damage is occasioned. NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS. Received July 30, 1 a.m. SYDNEY, July 29. There is a plethora of Liberal candidates and a possibility of extensive vote splitting at the forthcoming election, which is causing the Government anxiety. The Hon. J. H. Carruthers, the Premier, appeals to the electors to heal the dissensions, and close up the ranks against the Socialistic Labour Party.
