ESSAYS ON THE MINING INDUSTRY.

WELLINGTON, December 29
Information has been received by the Hon. James McGowan as to the results of the essays on the mining industry of New Zealand under present conditions and the best means of improving the same. Sixty competitors forwarded papers to the examiners. The judging resulted as follows: —First prize, 50 guineas and gold medal, R. Mcintosh, Mines Department, Duiiedin; second prize, 25 guineas and silver medal, James Williams, Reefton, who holds the School of Mines scholarship; third prize, 15 guineas and bronze medal, J. McCombie, Karangahake, manager of the Talisman Mine. The publication of the three successful essays will be undertaken very shortly.
