GAUMONT CHRONOPHONE.

Tbere was a vary large attendance at the Masterton Town Hall last eveoing when Messrs Stonham and Morrison presented their latest novelty—the Gaumont Cbronophone —to a Masterton audienoe for the first time. The Cbronophone Is a piece of mechanism wbioh produces what is termed "articulating pictures." The pictures are the ordinary ones which have been so long in vogue, but they are different from the general run of moving pictures in that tbey sing, talk, laugh and whistle. Simultaneously with the picture being shown on the canvas a song is produced by tbe cbronophone, wbioh Is worked by electricity. The novelty and realism of the combination is suob, however, that artificiality is forgotten, and the audienoe finds itself listening to tbe songs as though they were coming from tbe lips of a living actor. All the songs by this chrooophone drew forth loud applause from the audienoe, especially the laughing song, "Strolling Home Witb Angelina," and "The Serenade" (whistling^. The ordinary moving pictures shown were very good. Tbe beefc film was that entitled "Winter in Switzerland." In this were shown all the various ways in which tbe inhabitants amuse themselves on the snow. The Elberfield overhead railway was rather a novel picture, and the footall match, between JNew Zealand and Wales, waß very realis-* tio. The best of others shown were "Shooting tbe Rapids on tbe Lakes of Killarney," "A Message from tbe Sea," "Saturday's Wages," 5" r* aval Manoeuvres," "A False ( Alarm," and "The New Woman." Mr J. Garry played two very fine violin solos entitled "Danses Hungroises" and "Serenade" (Pierner). He was received with loud! applause* A comic song entitled "Pilgrims of the Night" was sung successfully by Mr W. Ford. Ihe Company will not appear in Masterton to-nigbt as previously owing to their having to fulfil engagements in Wellington. They will open their season In Wellington on Saturday night.
