IMPRISONED IN A FLAT.
WEALTHY WIDOWS' REMARKABLE STORY. A wealthj eighty-year-old -Mdow, Mrs Margret Kelly, was rescued by the police from a West Side flat, in New York recently, under extraordinary ciroumstatnces. A pedestrian pioked tip a pill-box that fell at his feet as he was passing the flat. The box contained a pencilled note appealing for aßSißtance, and was promptly turned over to the police. When-two detectives inspected the building, they found Mrs Kelly locked iu a small room on an upper floor. She claimed that on the death of her hasbaod two years ago she was invited to ? live with some friends in the flat. They induced her to make a will in her favour, and afterwards imprisoned her. Mrs Kelly stated that she had been frequently beaten and nearly starved. Her friends bad always been told that ■he was too ill to see visitors. Mrs Kelly's gaolera went to the theatre on the evening in question, and forgot to look the door of her room. She made her way to a window overlooking the street, and broke the gl&ss, as she was too weak to raise the sash, she threw the pill-box out.
