GAS METERS
REPORT BY THE GAS MANAGER. A report on the subject of supplying gas meters to buildings containing offices was furnished to the Masterton Borough Counoil last evening by the manager of the Gasworks, He stated that he had been informed that tbe Council had deoided that no more than two gas meters should be fixed iu any one building, and that all inoiera in exoesa of that number must bo purchased by the owner of the building. These purchased meters must neaessarily be fixed a 8 cbenk meter?, and it would be bad policy on the part of the Council to fix a privately-ownod meter on to a direot gas main. Ohook meters, continued the report, led to endless dissatisfaction between landlord and tenant, as all gas supplied to tenants had to paf.3 through the landlord's meter. At the end of the month accounts had to be adjusted betweeu the landlord and all his tenants, generally to the mutual dissatisfaction of all oonoerred, and to the ultimate detriment of the gas business. Admitting that the capital cost of fixing meters for ofHce3 was usually out of proportion to the revenue received, the gas manager thought it would be a better policy to fix all office meters as direot main supplied meters, and charged au adequate meter rent of, say, Is per month, which would provide fair interest and sinking fund on the exact cout entailed. The consumer would then have the satisfaction of dealing direot with the gas departmen. This would in every way be a more convenient and desirable arrangement. The report was referred to the Works Committee.
