The Petone paper says:—"Quite a BPiisation was caused on Monday by the sudden disappearance of the proprietor of a private hotel. The boarders were all left without any. one in charge and almost without meals, while a gpod many creditors are reported to have been left without their money." The alleged destruction of native birds by .Maoris has been brought under the notice of the Colonial Secretary in Wellington by Mr H. G. Ell, M.H.R. Mr Ell has been credibly informed that the Maoris of Parihaba have slaughtered three thousand huias, and puc them down in fat, aooording to native custom. He has also learned that natives in the South Island are killing kiwis to obtain a supply of feathers for mat-making.
