The Wairarapa Mounted under the command of Captain 0. J. Jury, will go into oamp at Martinborough, on May 19th. A cablegram from Sydney, last evening, stated that the steamer Waikare had been delayed on aooount of stormy weather in the Tasinan Sea.

The May number of the Red Funnel Magazine is to hand from Messrs Gordon and Gotch, Ltd. As usual this magazine is replete with interesting greaaing matter, and is well illustrated.

Entries for the Eketahuna Poultry Association's fifth annual show, to be held on June 14tb and 15th, close with the Secretary, on June 2nd. Besides offering a liberal prize list, the Sooiety is giving away trophies and speoial prizes to the value of £4O.

The death occurred, at Makora Road, on Wednesday last, of Mrs Elizabeth Kedman, mother of Mr F. T. Kedman aad Mrp L. Thoamine, The deceased lady had attained the advanced age of 81 years. The funeral will take place this afternoon, leaving the residence of Mr Thoumine, at 2 At St. Peter's Church, Wellington, on Wednesday, Mr E. Sbep Dixon, of Palmerston North, was married to Miss Florence May Tyer, of Wellington. The bride, who was given eway by her father, was attend'ed by Miss K. Dixon, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss Edith Tyer, sister of the bride. Mr N. H. Sinclair was best and Mr Gilbert Tyer groomsman.

The members of the Masterton School Committee, who are accustomed to hold their meetings in the Technioal Sobool buildings, usually suffer inconvenience in the way .of seating accommodation owing to the casses being in progress at the Sobool at the same time as the committee meeting. Last evening the climax was reaobed when there were only three chairs and two small forms to accommodate, altogether, twelve persons The Committee resolved ,to seek new and more comfortable quarters, and it is probable that the Borough authori ties will be approached with a view to obtaining the Council Chambers for meeting purposes.'

The April number of the Windsor Magazine is to hand from Megiars McLeod and Young, bookseller,; Queen Street. The number consists of over 100 pages of x specially selected reading matter, by wellknown authors, the standard and variety of whioh is thoroughly in keeping with previous numbers. The illustrations are particularly artistip, and they appear with almost every article In the book. The coloured cartoons (the suhjeot for the month being "Bench and Bar"), whioh have already afctraoted considerable attention on acceunt of the olever chronicles accompanying the unique caitoons, are still continued; they are without doubt a feature of the magazine. "Sophy of Kravonia," a thrilling war story from the pen of Anthouy Hope, which has run through several numbers of the Windsor, still continues to prove interesting reading.

A cablegram from London, last, evening, stated that Eeuter reports that Sir N. Jordan, British Minister in Korea, will succeed Sir Ernest Satow as Minister in Ohina.

The Mayor and Town Clerk of Masterton will visit Wellington today to wait on the Minister of Mines with reference to the establishment of a State Coal Department in Masterton.

Mr H. W. Kelly, son of Mr W. H. Kelly, of Petone, was married at Carterton, on Wednesday, to Miss May Elizabeth Crawley, second daughter of Mr J. Crawley, an old Carterton settler.

Pour applications were received at the. meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday for the position of colleotor of tolls at the Tawataia Tollgate, and Mr T. H. Wysall was appointed to the position.

A meeting of delegates from the various athletic bodies in the Wairarapa ditsrict will be held in the Club Hotel, Masterton, to morrow at 2 p.m. to consider the proposal of forming a Wairarapa Athletic Association.

At the meeting of the Masterton County' Counoil, yesterday, Ora Toogood, Harris, Guild and the Chairman were appointed a Committee to make suggestions to Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., with regard to amendments to the Public Works Act enabling local bodies to frame by-laws suitable for the different conditions to be found in different districts.

The Mot&pikoTndmor seation of the Midland Railway will be opened on the 21th insfc. The rail tray is at present open from Nelson to Motupiko, a distanoe of 31 miles, and the extension it just over ten miles in length, running down the Motueka valley until opposite the Tadmor valley, when it the Motuefea river and proceeds an the Tadmor valley in the direction of the Bailer. The next season to be opened is to a village settlement called Manu, some tea and a half miles further on, and formation works are now in band for a distanoe of four or five miles.

According to the Standard, some Manawatu sportsmen were robbed of 21 ducks last week. The "bag" was taken from a whare while they were in pursuit of further game. "I will not allow civil cases to be adjourned sine die," Mr Bishop said at the Christohurch Magistrate's Court on Monday. "You may apply for as long an adjournment as you like, so long as yon name a date, and you can renew the adjournment. But an adjournment sine die simply means that there is no record kept of the ultimate disposition of the case." Owing to the state of the bars on the West Coast, eleven steamers, which the Union Steam Ship Oom- •< pany have iu that trade, have been stack up to some extent during the past month. Altogether their steamers lost sixty-eight days during the month. How much financial loss this lias occasioned may be judged {writes a Dunedin correspondent) from the fact that this would be equivalent to running two steamers for a month, both earning nothiig. At a meeting of the Southland Education Institute on Monday, a report was submitted that the chairman of a country committee, ap parently with the sanotion of the majority of the members, had taken the extreme step of trying to suspend a teacher, such action being seriously prejudicial to his reputation. It was resolved to forward a reprrt to the New Zealand Institute in order that legal advice might be obtained and authority given for the'iocal insitute to take proceedings at law.
