FAMINE IN JAPAN.

EFFECTS UNDER-ESTIMATED. WELLINGTON, May 1. On making enquiries the New Zealand Government has ascertained that tbe famine in Japan and the hardships endured by the people are more severe than was at first thought to be the oase. The Japanese Government having intimated that the effects of the famine were under-estimated, and that it was prepared to reoeive assistance. The iNew Zealand Government has forwarded £I,OOO as a contribution from this colony for the relief of the suffering.
