VICTORIA COLLEGE.
THE OPENING CEREMONY. WELLINGTON, March 30. The Victoria University College was opened, to day, by His Excellency tbe Governor. Tbe new building occupies a commanding site near Salamanca Road, overlooking the city and harbour. There was a large attendance of the public. On arrival, His Excellenoy was welcomed by Sir Robert Stout, Chancellor of the University, and con - ducted to tbe ball in which the opening ceremony took place. In an introductory speech Sir Robert Stout traced the history of the University and education in the colony, and emphasised its importance to the rising generation. He antici pated that before long the Victoria College would have a larger number of students than any of the other University colleges in the colony. His Excellency said that Wellington now possessed a college building adequate to its needs. He wished the Council and Professors every success, and exhorted the students to maintain the dignity of the college. The Hon. J. McGowan. Minister for Justice, gave a short address, in which he expressed his belief that the University should be free to every boy and giil.
