QUINLAN SENTENCED TO DEATH. Received March 16, 11.40 p.m. SYDNEY, March 15. Quinlan, who murdered Mrs Mercy Gregory, has been sentenced to death, with a recommendation to mercy on the ground of his youth. Dr Palmer stated that the wounds were inflicted by one in a frenzied condition rather than by one who desired to Kill. Quinlan gave evidence in an extraordinarily calm manner, and told bow he committed the murd«»r. He had to pay for his brother's keep and clothe himself, while he also paid a small nstalment of his earnings to a moneylender from whom his mother borrowed money. He stabbed Mrs Gregory as she rushed at him. He retreated all the time. When he first went to the rbora there was nothing further from his mind than using his knife, which was in his pocket. The Government pathulogist said that the boy was deoidedly abnorrnal, and he had him under observation in the gaol, bnt Quinlan did not appear to have given any signs of regret or fear.
FIRE AT WOON-ONA. DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £3,000. Received Maroh 15, 10.45 p.m. SYDNEY, Maroh 15. A fire at Woon-ona, on the south coast, destroyed two business places, and a timber yard and sawmill. The township at one time was threatened with destruction, but a timel? fall of rain saved it. The damage amounts to about £3,000. THE PROPRIETARY MINE FIKJS. SLOWLY SPREADING. POSITION BECOMING SERIOUS. Received March 15, 10.45 p.m. SYDNEY, March 15. Despite all efforts the tire at the Proprietary Mine is slowy spreading. The position is serious.
