ALLEGED BURGLARY.
AN AUCKLAND SENSATION. AUCKLAND. March 14. William Smith and Alice Simon were committed for trial to-day on a charge of breaking and entering a shop at Newton, and stealing a small quantity of goods. Smith was, also, committed for trial on a charge of attempting to murder Constable Coppell, who said that when chased after leaving the shop, Smith fired twice, shouting "Keep back!" When arrested a revolver was taken from him, loaded in all but two of the chambers. The female aooused made a statement to the effect that Smith opened the shop door with a skeleton key. A witness who toolj part in the chase said the first bullet passed within two feet of the officer.
