At a meeting of three thousand people, ia Johannesburg, called for the purpose of protesting against the slanders iu England in regard to the Transvaal community, Mr Chares Loonurd, President of the Johannesburg National Union, challenged the noisy minority to substantiate their allegations of cruelty. One member of the audience quoted the ill-usage of six Chinese convicts by warders, and offered to produce witnesses of the ill-usage in the miues, if a guaraatee were forthcoming that the witnesses would not suffer in the matter of their employment. The guarantee was given, and a resolution protesting against the ill-usage was carried by an overwhelming majority. A resolution, moved in the body of the ball, urging the Motherland to appoint a Royal Commission to enquire into the conditions of Chinese labour on the Hand was carried unanimously.
