THE WORLD'S WHISKY
Replying to the toast of "The Firm," proposed by Lord Hcadley at the opening of Dewar House (Messrs Dewar and Sons' new headquarters in the Haymarket, London), Sir Thomas Dewar said that enough whisky was in bond to last the world four and threequarter years, if no more was distilled. Seeing that the Board of Trade would have the last word in the " What ia Whisky?" controversy, said Sir Thomas, he would give them a selection for a name in a phrase—" Bonnie Dundee, out ot Manchester — Winston, a great pot still," During a tour round the world on the firm's behalf he (Sir Thomas) had visited the Prohibitionist State of Maine, and had procured samples of the liquor permitted to be sold there. The recipe for one beverage was : " Take a gallon of wood alcohol ; add a wineglass of glycerine to mellow it j then grind down some plug tobacco to give body to it." He asked what it was called, and was told " squirrel whisky." "Why?" he had asked. " Wa-al," came the answer, " I guess it's because the men who drink it talk 'nutty ' and climb trees."
