THE BABBITS.
It is evident from the success which has attended the inoculating experiments carried out by Drs Butcher and Ellis at Sydney, and the announcement of the New Zealand Government of their willingness to give M. Pasteur's system a trial, that before long arrangements will be made for extensive tests in this country of the different inoculating schemes set forth. The Government propose to set apart some island along the coast for the purpose j and if it is found that the disease is fatal to the rabbits, and does not fatally affect other animals, then, we presume, diseased rabbits will be turned adrift in the infested districts. The disease, we are told, spreads very rapidly ; and a rabbit only lives a few hours after catching it. The Government should not consider expense in this matter ; for if they are convinced that the pest can be successfully exterminated, the scheme which relieves us from its ravages will be cheap at almost any price. The New South "Wales Government have decided to appoint a Commission, composed of experts chosen from all the colonies, and to this Commission all schemes are to be referred. This Is the only way of coming to a satisfactory arrangement, and we trust the New Zealand Government will not be slow in extending its most cordial assistance.
