(From our own Correspondent.) Invercargill, January 21st. Mr R. Cockerill, of Invercargill, hag applied for a patent for a new sectional disc-harrow.
A public meeting of policy-holders in the Government Insurance Association was held here last night to protest against the appointment of Mr Henry Driver at £1000 a-year. The speakers were very severe on Sir Julius Yogel and Mr Drivgr. A resolution was forwarded to the Insurance Board, Wellington, strongly protesting against the appointment. It was as follows:— ■'•' That the policy-holders present at this meeting view with alarm the proposed appointment of Mr Henry Driver at a salary of £800 or £1,000 ayear to any position in the Government Insurance Association, and they beg to protest against the same in the most emphatic manner as most unwise, uncalled for, and likely to be a serious tax on the profits of policy-holders," A change in the weather has taken place, and the much-needed rain has come at last. January 22nd, My prognostications as to bad weather or rain approaching were like the gallant Captain Edwin's— viz., slightly out ; but, like thp Captain's, my prophecy will come right some day in the " sweet by-and-bye." Charles Mawer was committed for trial at Riverton yesterday for hut-breaking. His Honor Judge Ward and Mrs Ward conducted services at the Invercargill Baptist Church on Sunday last. Mr C. Malfroy is now on his way South to report upon a recent gold discovery referred to in my telegrams last week.
A Vermont debating society will tackle the question, i( Which is the fan— to sea a man trying to thread a needle, or to see, a woman try to drive a nail V
