BUBNSIDE YABDS — WEDNESDAY. Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited), reports for the week ending January 20th a* follows :—: — Fat Oaitle.— 225 head were yarded at Burnside to-day ; full half were prime, the rest small heifers and cows mostly in fair killing condition. Be9t pens sold fairly well at fully last week's rates, while other sorts were very dull at greatly reduced prices. Bullocks sold at £4 10s to £9 (a couple of pens to £10)) ; cows, £3 to £8 7s 7d. Fac Calves. — 21 jarded. There was not much competition, and prices ruled low. Fat Sheep.— lso7 were penned. Of these 140 were merinos, the rest crogsbreds in good condition. Butcbers held large supplies from last week. Grazie: s, also, in consequence of the scarcity of grass, were unßble to buy, so that to-d'iy's sale was about the worst ever held at Buvnside. Indeed, a good number were held over unsold. Crossbreds sold at 5s to 8s ; a few extra fine crossbred wethers to 9a 6d ; merinos almost unsaleable at 3s to ss. Lambs. — Prices were about same as last week, but towards the close there was a dull demand. Prices ranged from 3a 6d to 7s. Pig 3. — Market overstocked, 189 being yarded, nearly all porkers to heavy bacon pigs. There was little or no demand, prices all through being absurdly low. Store Cattle. — The long prevailing dry weather has had the effect of weakening prioes and somewhat decreasing the demand. Bullocks range from £3 10s to £6 ; cows, £2 10s to £3 10s, Si ore Sheep. — We have no alteration to report in this market ; and until we htive some good rainfalls we do not look for any marked improvement in the demand. Wool. — We held our third sale for this season at the Otago Wool Stores, Lower Rattray street, on Friday, the 13th insr., when we catalogued 587 bales of wool, of which 430 were sold under the hammer. There was a very full attendance of buyers, both looal and foreign, also a large crowd of growers. Very good competition was excited for both merino and crossbreds, light in grease, well skirted, and of good healthy j growth, prices obtained for these being in some instances up to last year's, whilst, earthy, bad col or 9d, heavy in grease, coarse and inferior descriptions were in less demand, and no improvement in prices for such at our opening sales. Greasy crossbred and half* bred medium brought 6id to 8d ; do do, light, Sid to 9|d; washed crossbred to lid. Sheepskins.—Our weekly sale was held last Monday, when we submitted a good catalogue to a fair attendance of the trade, who competed briskly for all offered ; dry i rossbreds brought from 9d to 3s 6d j dry merino, lOd to 3s sd ; dry pelts, Id to 4£d ; green do, 6d to 7d ; lambskins, 9d to lOd. Babbitskins. — We offered a few lots on Monday, and although re any buyers were present there was very little desire to purchase, except al extremely low prices, from id to s£d. " Hides. — This market continues fairly brisk ; lata quotations are obtainable for all coming to hand. Tallow. — There is not much inquiry for shipping, but for local use tbe demand is steady. Country-rendered is easily placed at late rates— viz., inferior, 12s to 14s ; medium, 15s to 17s ; good to prime, 18s to 19s ; rough fat, 7s to 11b per cwt.
