BIBULOUS SENATORS.
The " Wanganui Chronicle " is responsible for the following :— While speaking of the lobbies and the general internal economy of the House, one is constrained to notice the fact that there is a great deal of "liquoring up "down at this Uoase of Parliament. One night last week it was indeed specially noticeable, and as the matter was referred to on Friday night in open house by the member for Timaru there is no harm in my making mention of it. On Mr Pyke's motion of want of confidence going to division, a scene of great confusion took place at the entrance of one of the lobbies. A member who represents the political opinions of an Otago constituency was observed staggering and reeling about, while Sir George Grey appeared to be endeavoring to guide him into the Opposition lobby. As the inebriated one is a consistent supporter of Stout, Yogel, and Co., his being conducted into the " noes " lobby was by no mean 3 agreeable to Mr Dick Seddon and others. They rushed forward and rescued the bibulous senator, and his vote was duly recorded with the " Ayes " or Government men. As to the state the Otago man was in, there could not possibly be any doubt, and his lurching forward and vainly endeavoring to pull himself together, caused great merriment. And this is one of New Zealand's senators. When the House adjourned at three a.m. one or two others were nearly in the same condition.
