The " Star " correspondent, telegraphing from Wellington thia afternoon, says : The Public Works Estimates are now through, with the exception of the immigration vote— a bagatelle of £30,373, and against which are £8,000 of liabilities. Some Auckland members fear that in the present stats of feeling of the House the San Francisco service is in danger. Mr Bryce goes Home by the Kaikoura, leaving here for London direct on the 2j r fch inst. He proceeds to Wanganui on Wednesday.
For some days past a rumor has been industriously circulated that during the recess the Premier will retire from office, and recommend that the Treasurer be sent for to re-oonstruct the Cabinet. A reason assigned for Mr Stout's retirement is that his private practice requires his constant attendance in Dunedin. The hon. gentleman, however, informs me that the statement is absolutely untrue.
