(From our own Correspondent.) Dunbdin, August 4th. An application to change the venue in the case of Anderson v. Strode was refused to-day.
A peculiar mistake was made in an information laid for assault, heard at the Police Court to-day, in which defendant was actually charged with assaulting himself, and as he would not consent to amendment the case was dismissed.
On the voyage of the Tekapo from Sydney, a seaman fell from the upper yard, breaking hia leg and some of his ribs. A whirlwind was experienced ; and a ram, for which 262 guineas was paid in Sydney, was lost. The ram was Grand Prince, belonging to Mr Gaulter.
Mr John Hebden, editor of the Canterbury "Times," who was injured in the coach accident on 22nd July, died last night. He was connected with the Lyttelton " Times " for over twenty years, and was only forty-three years of age. A ivharc at Pigeon Bay, occupied by an old man named Pierre Fernandez, wa3 burnt down on Sunday. Fernandez's body was discovered among the debris.
(Renter's Special.) Madkid, August 2nd. The cholera continues to spread with unabated vigor, and the daily mortality is very great throughout the country. Ottawa, August 2nd. The trial of the insurgent Loais Kiel was concluded to-day, when the jury found the prisoner guilty, but recommended him to mercy on account of the weak state of his mind. He was, however, condemned to be hanged.
