THE POET IN LOVE.
(Original.)
A voice is heard amongst the hills Around Tuapeka Bavin, Whose swell the wild Otago fills, E'en as a king's oration. Its latoat strains, a plaint of love ; Ah ! but cherish well the Heaven-sent dove. When Cupid wounds c'en cominou men — Exporieuce will allow it ; — Not oft they sigh and sigh in vain, And wherefore should the poet ? Your lady-love may spurn your tale, Yet know they often speed who seem to fail. Go, call the Muses to your aid, And seok tho aid of Heaven ; Those gifts that bloom and never fade Are gifts that are God-given. And that you have what you desire I wish, and yet to higher bliss aspire. And in your home far up the heights, Or minding your vocation, Sing on, remembering song unites The heart-throbs of a nation ; And, more than most things else, it moulds The f uturo minds. What good or ill it holds ! X.X.X.
