DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB RACES.
v FipsT Day.— Thursday. The attendance at the Forbury Park on Thursday, was the largest ever known upon the course. The Cup resulted in a victory for the favorite, and a victory so easy as to justify the wonderful confidence that was displayed about him. The surprise of the day was undoubtedly the victory of Evertop Lad in the Champagne S tikes, upsetting Stonyhurst and Wai-iti ; and of Leon in the Maiden Plate, Ravenscraig in the latter race failing altogether to fulfil the expectations of his supporters. The Stewards' Purse was considered to lie between Mr Stead's pair, who did not declare to win with either. Appended are the details of the various events :—: — Handicap Hdbdle Race, of lOOaovs. Two
miles and a distance. Mr J. Smith's Ravenswood, aged, 103t 121 b

Trapper, Little John, and Moody also ran. Little John led for the first mile, when he was displaced by Lin wood. Shortly afterwards Ravenswood came to the front and had the race on his own terms, winning easily by eight lengths. Everton Lad jumped off with the lead, followed by Spade Guinea and Stonyhurst. After a few hundred yards had been travelled, Spade Guinea wrested the lead from Everton Lad, and Stonyhurst also gave Mr Stephenson's colt the go-by. Stonyhurst gradually closed on Spade Guinea, and the whip being on Everton Lad a quarter of a mile from home, the issue appeared left to the two leaders. In the last two hundred yards, however, Kean brought Everton Lad up with a run on the inside, and the colt, running with the greatest gameness, shot past Stonyhurst and Spade Guinea, and won handsomely by just a length. Dunedik Ccp, of l.OOOsovs, with a sweepstake of 15sovs each added. The second horse to receive 200aovs, and the third KKbovs from the stakes. Two miles and a distance. Hon. W. Lady Emma, July, Nelson, The Poet, Waipiti, Captain Webster, and Adamant also ran. Sou-wester was scratched.
Vanguard showed in front at the start, but was quickly steadied, the post of honor being taken by Minerva, who made the running for fully a mile, followed by Captain Webster and The Poet. At the far corner of the course Vanguard began to travel, and coming through his horses, easily passed into fourth, and then, as Captain Webster fell back into third place, Mr Bate's pair still holding the lead. Stratford here called upon Trenton, and the colt responding gamely, went past the favorite and tried conclusions with Minerva. The pair made a cut throat struggle of it up the straight, and Trenton managed to shake off the chestnut, but he had no reply ready for Vanguard, who ran up, took an easy lead, and won just as he liked by about a length and a-half. Time, 3mm 53 sec. Of £4205 in the totalisators, £1186 was on Vanguard. Dividends : Inside (£2 tickets), £6 43 ; outside (£1 tickets*), £3 Bs. Selling Race, of '60-iovs. One mile and a
