Christchurch, January 13bh.

A determined and repeated attempt at incendiarism is repoitsd from Leeston. Yesterday afternoon Thomas Francis, a respected resident of the township, discovered some half-burnt paper and gorse heaped against the sicU of his house. A few matches were under the paper. The same evening at nine o'clock another attempt was made to burn down the same house. The floor in one of the rooms was found to be on fire The neighbors gathered, and the fire was quickly put out. Under the floor was found a sack saturated with keroseie. The attempt created a great scare in the township. There is no clue to the perpetrator.

"Nelson January 15th. A telegram from Motteka states that F. Bisley shot himself there yesterday morning. His monetary affairs are believed to be in a bad state. He was headmaster of the State school, and Secretary to the local Oddfellows' and Foresters' Lodges. He leaves a wife and larg? family.

Auckland, January 14th. A. gold discovery of a promising character is reported to have recently been made in the Waikato district. The exact locality is at present kept a secret on behalf of the discoverers, and is within 45 miles of Kikikihi, the headquarters of the Armed Constabulary. The gold found (Bozs.) was waterworn and was obtained from some washings taken out of a creek. The gold was taken to the Bank of New Zealand at the Thames. One of the pieces of gold obtained weighed ldwt. The naked body of a nun apparently only recently drowned was picked up by a waterman at Shelly Beach, at Ponsonby, to-day. It has been recognised as that of Mr Foreman, formerly gardener to the City Council.

General regret is felt at his death, At five o'clock this evening, the oharges against Waring Taylor were adjourned till Monday morning, in order to allow Mr "Murdoch/ general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, who is on board the steamer due to-morrow, to be present to give .evidence and produce the original share of the ißank. i, A man named Cronin, acting-guard of the' trap to Maaterton,, Jajst night, while the train crossing a bridge four miles on .the* other side of Eaitoke, attempted to pus from one carriage to another.

He missed his footing, and fell clean through the timbers of the bridge. He had a miraculous escape, but is not seriously injured. The Hon. Mr Stout is gazetted Minister of Education.
