TUAPEKA. ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held in the Council Chambers, Lawrence, on Friday last, at 2 o'clock. There were present, the Chairman, and Messrs Riddell, Fraser, and Evaus. During the sitting Messrs Docherty and Gascoigne took their place. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward' correspondence consisted of a letter to the Borough Council, with reference to a road to the cemetery by MrDarton's boundary, fence. 1 ' ROAD TO" STEVENSON'S. The Engineer reported that the sum of £10 voted for the road* through section 42, block V., Tuapeka East ; would be be insufficient. He estimated the cost at £35. Mr Fraser was opposed to anything being expended on that road, as it would only suit the convenience of one .person, whereas the road at present in use would be convenient for several residence area holders as w«U. He also thought the VVaitahuna Road Board should be asked to assist, as the one settler who would receive the benefit from the road, paid his rates to that Board. He proposed that the Engineer be requested to survey a road on the West side near the residence areas, and that the Clerk be instructed to write, to the Waitahuria Board asking them to contribute something towards the new road seeing the principal settler's land, for whom the road is asked is situated in the Waitahua Road District ; also to suggest that if they gave £20 the Tuapeka Board would give a like sum. This was seconded and carried. road to kelly's. The Engineer also reported regarding this road — that the sum voted; viz , £6 would not be sufficient for it, as it would take £13. On the motion of Mr Frasor it was -decided to let the, matter stand over till next meeting. • S.URFAOEMEtf. The Chairman remarked that if one or two surfacemen were employed for four or six months of the year on the roads, under the Board's jurisdiction, great benefits would accrue. Mr Fraser was strongly in favor of this course. He considered the District had been greatly neglected in this respect. An application from Thomas Wilson, for the appointment of surfaceman was received. After some conversation Mr Evans moved that Mr Wilson be engaged at the current rate of wages. Mr Fraser seconded the motion. Both gentlemen spoke highly of the applicant as did also the Chairman and all present, Mr Riddell, while agreeing with all that had been said, thought that the fairest way would be to publicly call for applications. The only objection offered to to this course was the delay that would be \ caused. — The motion was carried. , [At a laterjstage in the proceedings, Mr AJlan MitohelJ was fthjo appointed.] ROAD TO MB ÜBBN'sf. The consideration of the application by Mr Uren for the expenditure of $ small snm of money en the toad from the town boundary towards his property, was again adjourned. MB PEARSONS APPLICATION. Mr John Pearson's application that the road outside the town boundary and approaching to his house be attended to by the Board, was next considered. It was decided that tlje surfacemen attend to this road, and also to the other roads to which the Board's attention had been directed. The road at the head of Mun» ros and Kelly's road already referred to, it was decided could be done by the surfacemen. It was resolved that the surfacemen be intimated to let off; the water from Forsyth to Fraser's opposite M'Rae's. [The remainder of the report of this meeting will appear in our next issue.]
